California has launched a new annual campaign to fight food waste.

Food Waste Prevention Week is from March 5th to March 9th. The state partnered with the Ad Council to launch The site is educating Californians about their food consumption, food waste, and environmental impacts. These issues hit close to home for California as water shortages often plague the state. California also produces more than half the nation’s fruits, nuts, and vegetables.

California Launches Food Waste Prevention Week estimates Americans waste 40% of their food, and 90% of people throw away food too soon! The prevention of food waste has both financial and environmental benefits.

“Prevention reduces the cost of purchasing, handling, and ultimately disposing of food that isn’t eaten. It also helps avoid the use of water, agricultural chemicals, energy, and other resources used to produce, process, transport, package, and dispose of that food.” –

Small steps can make a significant impact. Shopping wisely, proper portions, using leftovers, freezing foods, using items in your kitchen before going to the store, and checking if food is spoiled can all significantly reduce food waste. The state’s food waste prevention program is similar to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” mantra.

Food Recovery Hierarchy
