The United States Agency of International Development is working to advance roles of women in the African power industry.
The Women in African Power program was launched in 2015 by Power Africa, a USAID organization. The program aims to increase participation of women in the power sector. It is comprised of existing women leaders and emerging leaders within the government sector, private sector, civil society and academia.
Power Africa is working to:
- Increase women’s participation in energy sector policy development and project planning processes;
- Increase consideration of gender issues in the design of energy sector policies and projects;
- Increase women’s participation in the energy sector workforce; and
- Increase women’s access to the benefits of energy services
Capitalizing on the talents of women will help to give half the population more significant job opportunities and lift communities out of poverty. The Women in African Power program provides information exchange, mentorship, and exposure to business opportunities.

600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are without electricity. Power Africa’s goal is to provide more than 30,000 megawatts of cleaner, more efficient electricity. This project will create new jobs, and the Women in African Power program aims to provide women with these job opportunities.
