Indonesia Earthquake Survivors Receive UN Tents

Indonesia Earthquake Survivors Receive UN Tents
October 30, 2018

Roughly 2,000 people were killed in the 7.5 magnitude Indonesian earthquake in September 2018. The earthquake triggered a tsunami, landslides and widespread destruction.

200,000 people were displaced as a result of the natural disaster. Survivors used plastic sheeting to create makeshift shelters, but these protections could not withstand the rainfall. Survivors need shelter, clean water and sanitation, access to medical care, education, and a sense of security. The United Nations Refugee Agency will provide 10,000 tents to those in the most need.

In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, governments and humanitarian organizations must provide shelter, food, and clean water. When infrastructure is compromised, offering basic necessities can be difficult. Aldelano Solar Solutions products offer humanitarian organizations robust off-grid solar equipment that can support a single family or an entire village with cold storage for food or medicine, clean water generated from moisture in the air and electricity.

Ten-year-old Olivia told staff at a World Vision Child-Friendly Space, “the earthquake has destroyed and swallowed up our home.” Olivia was at a village football game when the quake hit. Her father grabbed her hand and ran with her to the top of a hill as the ground moved and people cried out. Now her family lives under a tarpaulin cover at an evacuation center.

Children are at high risk after natural disasters due to human trafficking and loss or separation of caregivers. Governments and humanitarian organizations must act fast to offer security to the most vulnerable. Aldelano Solar Solutions products are mobile and offer life-saving resources. Industrial-grade solar power offers communities a sense of security and normalcy in the aftermath of a crisis.

Areas, like Indonesia, in areas of frequent natural disaster must plan ahead. Indonesia is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a series of volcanic islands which create shifts in tectonic plates that trigger earthquakes. Earthquakes greater than magnitude 6 occur almost annually in Indonesia. Roughly 300,000 are still displaced after major earthquakes that hit the Lombok island on July 29th, August 5th, August 9th, and August 19thof, 2018. Damage is still being assessed from the earthquake on September 28th.

Aldelano Solar Solutions provides governments of high-risk regions with mobile, solar equipment that can be used off-grid in areas of need.
